Fused Glass is the newest addition to our family of glass arts here at Tiffany House, but it has rapidly taken off and became very popular. As the name implies, fused glass or "kiln-fired" glass is glass that is created by "fusing" or melting together pieces of compatible art glass in a kiln, to a temperature high enough to cause them to fuse together into a permanently blended unit or new piece of glass. The finished glass can be "slumped" in a kiln into a three dimensional shape by placing it over a ceramic or metal mold and heating the glass until it softens and conforms to the mold. Various kiln-working techniques can be applied to a glass work in separate firings to add color patterns and unique designs, depth, relief and just about any shape and size.
Although glass was fused in ancient times, modern equipment and new materials, as well as a contemporary understanding of the principles involved in the process, make glass fusing one of many popular techniques used for artistic expression with glass nowadays. Here at Tiffany House, it's catching on fast!
